Advice In How To Perform A Brilliant Keynote Speech

By Katina Flores

If you have never made a public speech before, then it can be very daunting. A keynote speech can be made at any event. For example- at a business conference. If this is something required of you, then stop for a second. These tips on how to give a keynote speech might just save you!

Be an expert in the topic at hand

Who wants to listen to someone waffle on about something they don't know about? Being serious, it's important to feel comfortable about what you are talking about. Should you have the honour of being the best man at a wedding, you probably should know all about the groom you are talking about. It might be a struggle to get on with the new wife, but make an effort for the sake of giving a good speech. Again, if you are a business speaker for the day, know what you are talking about. If you have to give a speech on a product or service, learn every aspect of it before the event. Try and test the product or service. The internet is a good basis for research. You should find a website detailing the product or service. For generic products or services, why not try Youtube or Wikipedia? If the product is well known, try Wikipedia or even Youtube for further information.

Research the audience

Audience interaction is key. A quick way to bore the audience to tears would be to simply stand and talk for over an hour. They won't get your message, because they won't be listening. Thus don't be one of those bad speakers. Learn about your audience before the speech. What companies do they work for? Are there any shared interests? Can you talk to them about something of benefit. Get the audience participating and helping you along. Use visual aids if necessary. Cliched as it may be, what about using Powerpoint? Whether you choose to allow your audience to participate is a difficult one. What sort of audience are they? Invite the confident audience members on stage. Leave the more nervous audience member alone. We've all been there!

Work for your employer

Whether you are getting free drinks, or presenting an important speech to your clients, it's important to work for them. If you need to sell to them, make sure you do it as best and non-aggressively as possible. If you are promoting their product, make sure you do them justice. Should you fail, don't expect to be asked to give a speech again.

Practising equals best preparation

The worse keynote speech will come through lack of preparation. The most skilled keynote speakers will practise over and over again. How about using cue cards? Commit the speech to memory. If you get lost you then at least have your cue cards to go back to your speech. Whoever you have to deliver a speech to, we do wish you the best of luck.
