The Cost Of Alcoholism Counseling For Alcoholics

By Melissa Herman

To identify alcoholics and how alcoholism counseling is successful is a discussion that can help you if the problem exists in your family. Drinking to addiction is not often understood as a disease because it appears that it is a choice by the addicted person. It is actually a disease that catches people in a viscous circle and before they know, the circle closes in and holds lives captive.

Alcohol addiction can get hold of the potential victim before he is aware. Families may not observe a problem at first but it is wise to note the progression of the disease as it is listed below.

Counselors of alcoholism see a clear sign as addiction begins with risky behavior of over drinking occasionally. This is good observation for parents of teenagers. An intervention can be more successful from parents at this point before there is fully developed addiction.

The abuse of alcohol is the next phase of drinking. You can observe the signals when you see bad judgment being used like blowing off curfew, fighting with other people, or disrespecting the other sex during intimacy.

Addiction is present when there is no way the family member can stop his drinking and he does not want to stop. There can be drunk driving signaling addiction or other legal problems like illegal drug use. The addicted person wants to anticipate his next opportunity to drink and plans for it. He no longer is able to control his drinking and only a solid motivation for change will prompt him.

As the years go on and alcoholism becomes a life style. You will witness devastation in the family, job loss and serious medical problems as the alcohol causes amnesia and other thinking problems at an early middle age. Finally, alcohol related illnesses and deaths rank with the higher causes of death rated today. It is a sad and unrewarding way to live life. The only one who can create the change is the alcoholic himself.

The state and many private organizations have set up rehabilitation centers for alcoholics. Sometimes interventions help to bring about a motive for change as all the family and friends confront the circumstances of the addicted family member. When patients cannot leave home because of children or teenagers, there are daytime clinics that treat alcoholism and the patient is released to go home everyday. Alcoholic treatment has also been successful in therapy sessions. AAA supports anyone who craves a drink from risky drinking to addiction. They have support meetings everyday in most cities and people who are at any stage of drinking are welcome. This is a great atmosphere for friendships to develop with sober people who understand the illness from experience.

All these rehabilitation methods have merit with the symptoms of alcohol and alcoholism counseling. The most important key to success is for the addicted drinker to make the decision to change. After becoming sober, a new life style must be created with people who care about seeing him succeed. This is where family is important, the AAA can be very helpful and therapists also participate in coaching the recovering alcoholic to a better life. It will take a small village to combat the problems caused by alcohol use.
