Tips For Instructors To Start The First Day Successfully

By Dawn J. Funes

Be it a first job or a first day of a new year at school, you are sure to see the same things. You will see teachers who are overly anxious and excited in anticipation of dealing with a big crowd.

Students may be very good and lovable but some of them are as naughty as they come, with the uncanny ability to reduce the unwary teacher to near tears. They really can be extremely irritating and confusing for someone who is not used to handling these types of situations on a daily basis.

There is the famous saying that if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. This tells you that for every important day, it is wise to plan ahead. Whether you are experienced or are a fresh starter, the best thing to do is to set up very solid outline of what to do and when to do. This will set a good pattern for the class to follow. The teacher must steer the ship to the right direction, as it were.

It should be a joint effort as the teacher works hand in hand with the students towards a common goal. It is similar to the crew with the vessel. It takes both to achieve the goal of reaching their destination. Having a prepared guide will make the students know where the teacher is taking them in their learning. It makes learning possible under friendly environment with the students being helped to have easy rapport in the class.

Be a teacher who eagerly and determinedly shares out knowledge. The learners will see this effort and reciprocate. Use these methods to get rid of those first day blues: start with the issues of attendance, giving assignments with setting of deadlines. You will see the day pass very smoothly and students will be ready to bolt out of class as soon as they hear the bell.

Teachers are gifted with talking and discussing things aloud. Any topic you choose will break the ice and let them warm up. Allow them to ask questions which will open their minds to learning as the conversation continues.

Students are now very well read and any subject you open up will find some contributions being made. Just encourage them to keep on with the discussion and they will offer wonderful ideas which are quite good for learning purposes.

You will soon see that learning has started with a lot of ease, and this makes the first day pass without any hitches at all. Now you just need to handle the rest of the school year to actually call the entire time a success.
