The Contrast Between Keynote Speakers As Opposed To An After Dinner Speaker

By Gina Fuller

Professional speaking has in recent times become very big business. Although there are different kinds of speakers its tricky for most to tell them apart. There is the keynote speaker who does motivational speaking, keynote speaking, after dinner speaking, guest speakers, conference hosts and presenters with many others who go with a number of labels and titles including the business speaker. There is lack of clarity when determining what these individuals do and which category suits each one of them. All kinds of speaking require an individual who will practice, has talent, does research, is able to apply humor, possesses a high level of intelligence and a couple more attributes. Although there is a standard in the basic requirements to all types of speaking there are certain differences found amongst the different groups. As we shall see, after dinner speakers are not keynote speakers though they could give a keynote speech.

Eloquence, humor, quick thinking and being very knowledgeable are some of the qualities needed for all speakers. They also need to know how to present their talks to the different groups that they come across. But there are some small differences in the way each of these speaking professionals' works. The main speaker in a session with several speakers is described as a keynote speaker. Most of the times they are individuals who are extremely knowledgeable in specific fields, well respected and versed.

During a speaking session, the keynote speakers will most times be the last to speak as well as being given the longest time to deliver their speech. The keynote speakers should have the ability to deliver a speech that is entertaining, informative and memorable. It is an expensive affair to hire a professional keynote speaker. There are keynote speakers, who will render free services if addressing professional bodies to which they are members.

At many events you will find an after dinner speaker who has been invited to entertain guests and may be the only speaker at the occasion. Normally they are not the main attraction of the event, unlike the keynote speakers, they are expected to play a complimentary role. After dinner speakers need to present an entertaining talk that is also informative in a casual manner. This is in contrast to the formal speeches that are sometimes quoted by authors of professional publications as presented by keynote speakers. After dinner speakers will rarely have people quoting their speeches in any publications.

An after dinner speaker will not be expected to educate his audience as much as a keynote speaker though they should be well informed. Fund raisers, parties and other such events are places you will find an after dinner speaker. While keynote speakers are bound to get invites to seminars, symposiums and other such meetings especially where the audience is from specific professional organization. An after dinner speaker can be invited to be a keynote speaker at an event. After dinner speaking however is done by few keynote speakers. Just like keynote speakers, hiring an after dinner speaker can be a costly affair. Unless in a charity event, you can hardly find an after dinner speaker who does the job for free.
