Plans To Begin Life Independently

By Linda Hubert

Living on your own for the first time can be very difficult financially. One way to help with finances is to get some roommates like some friends or classmates instead of going in on a place on your own. However, often times your lovable and fun roommates can be quite messy when it comes to house cleanliness.

One of the first things to be established at your new place is hygiene. Hopefully this will be a simple ground rule to lay out that everyone can agree on. Also, be sure to lay out what is acceptable when it comes to cleanliness.

For example, each roommates mess should be restricted to their own room or area. As for the kitchen, bathroom, and other shared areas, there should be a time limit for cleaning your own messes.

A chore list is a great way to keep everything in line and everyone get along. This list will be helpful when raw foods have been left out or the toilet is clogged.

When living with new roommates it is important to respect each other and everyone's living habits. In doing so everyone will need to remember that they need to change some of the things they are use to doing to make the house a more comfortable place for everyone.

Another thing is to make sure you are all clear on ground rules for personal items like dishes, food, and other things. Another important discussion to have is about acceptable behaviors in the house. Having these conversations can avoid a lot of problems in the future.

The bills are another important thing to bring up in your house meeting. It is important to make sure that everyone is clear on the bills and when they need to be paid.

Another good way to do this is to assign one roommate each month to collect the money and pay the bills. Just be sure that the roommate is responsible with the funds and doesn't spend them on other things.
